Stone Carpet Evolution: Conventional 2K Systems vs. VIRANIX 1K Technology
Stone carpet flooring has represented the pinnacle of premium construction and durable renovation for decades. When choosing a technology, the question that often comes up is: stick with the well-proven two-component (2K) system, or switch to the newest single-component (1K) innovation?
Conventional 2K systems: Pioneers of durability
2K resin-based stone carpets are extremely durable systems. We've personally inspected stone carpet floors that are 16, 20, even 30 years old that still function perfectly to this day. So the 2K technology has proven itself — but the complexity of installation has always carried serious risk.
The limits of the technology: What needed to be solved?
With conventional systems, mixing components A and B on-site requires precise ratio calculations and pharmacy-grade scales. A small mixing error can cause blotching or curing defects. Modern technology eliminates this stress and risk of error.
A breakthrough on vertical surfaces: No additives needed
Until now, the hardest part of laying stone carpet has been vertical surfaces (baseboards, the sides of stair steps). With conventional systems, separate thickening agents (thixotropic additives) had to be mixed in to keep the material from running down.
VIRANIX brought a revolution here: our premium, water-based binder — 6 kg per bucket — has been optimized so that it stays in place on vertical surfaces without any extra additives. No more experimenting, no sliding aggregate — just clean, stable adhesion.
What types of substrates can VIRANIX be applied to?
A perfect, durable result starts with the right substrate. VIRANIX 1K technology provides maximum adhesion, but it has strict physical rules for what counts as a suitable substrate.
You can confidently apply it here (after proper priming):- Stable, load-bearing concrete and screed surfaces.
- Baseboards, retaining walls, and stairs built from formwork blocks.
- Existing, stable hard flooring (tile, ceramic flooring) — strictly after surface sanding and using an adhesion bridge/primer.
- Loose, shifting layers (soil, sand, gravel, or a loose bed of stones).
- Surfaces with significant thermal expansion and movement (wood flooring, untreated OSB panels), because the movement will crack the resin.
- Crumbling, flaking, dusting concrete (loose, flaking parts must be ground back to a stable layer before application).
- Substrates with constant rising damp and no waterproofing (rising moisture will destroy adhesion).
VIRANIX: Progress, without the unnecessary hassle
VIRANIX targeted exactly the weak points of 2K systems. VIRANIX is a revolutionary, pre-mixed (ready-to-use) 1K stone carpet system. The 6 kg of premium, water-based binder per bucket is already combined at the factory in the most optimal ratio possible.
What are the benefits of using VIRANIX?
- No more ratio calculations: No A+B experimenting. Just open the bucket, and the material is ready to use.
- EU-compliant and future-proof: The European Union (e.g. under REACH) is continuously tightening regulations on hazardous solvents and isocyanates. VIRANIX's completely solvent-free, water-based formula already meets the strictest future standards.
- A uniform surface: Thanks to factory optimization, there are no resin-deficient patches — the result is the same quality across every square meter.
- A sealed, easy-to-clean structure: VIRANIX forms a solid, sealed surface. There are no gaps for dirt to settle into, so cleaning it is effortless.
An honest word about limits: there's no miracle material
Premium quality doesn't mean indestructible. For VIRANIX to last for decades, you need to know its limits:
Water is the enemy: If the surface isn't properly sealed (e.g. with a 2K PrimeCoat topcoat) and stands in water for days on end, the binder can fade. Proper drainage is essential.
Cold and frost: At low temperatures, the material thickens and stiffens, which makes application harder and increases curing time. Following the installation guidelines is critical to success.
