🧱 Viranix Stone Carpet Priming at a Master Level – Durability Is Decided by the First Layer

A stone carpet floor's good looks come from the finish, but its durability depends on the primer. In the Viranix system we use a single-component, pre-mixed resin primer (no mixing, no thinning) – applied in a thin, sealed film with a brush/roller.

1) 💡 Why is primer mandatory?

  • Adhesion bridge 🔗: it "locks" into the substrate's pores at a microscopic level.

  • Absorbency equalization ⚖️: the resin doesn't get sucked away unevenly, so the curing won't be blotchy.

  • Vertical stability 🧗: on walls/baseboards, it holds the fresh material in place.

  • System stability 🛡️: stone carpet and topcoat can only go onto a dry, homogeneous primer.

Golden rule: primer isn't paint → the goal is a thin, sealed, even film, not "thick coverage."

2) 📏 Mandatory measurement limits

  • Substrate moisture (CM): ≤ 9%

  • Substrate pH: ≤ 10

  • Air temperature: ≥ +5 °C (recommended +5…+30 °C)

  • Relative humidity (RH): ≤ 80%

  • Dew point: the surface temperature must be at least +3 °C above the dew point
🧪 Measure, log, and photograph — this is a warranty requirement and evidence in case of any dispute.

3) 🧰 Tool and material list

  • Material: Viranix single-component, pre-mixed resin primer (ready to use).

  • Application: a medium-pile paint roller, 50–70 mm brush (for corners/edges).

  • Preparation: industrial vacuum, protective sheeting, masking tape, a spatula.

  • Measurement: CM moisture meter, pH test, thermometer/hygrometer (for dew point calculation).

  • Cleaning: a compatible cleaner for material that hasn't yet cured.

  • PPE: safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves, respiratory protection if needed; good ventilation indoors. 😷
Pro tip: use an opened bucket immediately. ⏱️

4) 🧼 Surface preparation – a foolproof routine

  • Dust removal: industrial vacuum (dust is adhesion's enemy #1).

  • Degreasing: oil/paint/rubber → local sanding + degreaser.

  • Defect repair: removing and repairing cracks, craters, and loose layers.

  • Adjusting roughness: roughen up a substrate that's too smooth.

  • Masking: protecting edges, expansion joints, and connections.

  • Measurement & photo: recording CM ≤ 9%, pH ≤ 10, and T/RH/DP.

5) 🖌️ Application protocol (thin film)

No mixing, no thinning. The primer comes pre-mixed and ready – it just needs to be applied correctly.

  1. "Cutting in" the edges: with a brush at corners, penetrations, and edges.

  2. Rolling the flat surface: from a roller tray, using cross-rolling (lengthwise → crosswise).

  3. Layer thickness: a thin, sealed film, don't let it pool, and it shouldn't look glossy.

  4. Highly absorbent substrate: two thin coats, always after the first has fully dried.

  5. Self-check: look for missed strips/shiny patches under raking light.

6) ⏳ Drying and next steps

  • Visual sign: the surface is matte and uniform.

  • Touch test: dry, not sticky; leaves no mark on a glove.

  • Time window: 4–12 hours, depending on conditions.

  • Next steps: stone carpet/topcoat only goes onto a fully dry primer.

  • If 24–48 hours have passed: remove dust again, since dust will have settled on it.

7) 🧮 Material consumption & planning (kg/m²)

  • Primer (1K, ready-mixed): 0.10 kg/m²

  • Topcoat 1K (protective): 0.20–0.30 kg/m²

  • Buffer: always plan for an extra +5–10%

Sample calculation – a 20 m² terrace (normal concrete):

  • Primer: 0.10 × 20 = 2.0 kg → +10% = 2.2 kg

  • Topcoat 1K: 0.25 × 20 = 5.0 kg → +10% = 5.5 kg

  • Total protective layer: approx. 7.7 kg 📦

8) 🚨 Common mistakes → symptom, cause, fix

  • Primer too thick
    Symptom: glossy/pooled, sticky.
Cause: trying to "cover" it like paint.
Fix: let it fully dry → fine sanding (120–150 grit) → a thin corrective coat.

  • Missed strip
    Symptom: localized delamination later on.
    Cause: skipped cross-rolling.
Fix: remove dust → apply a thin corrective primer coat.

  • Whitening, pinholes
    Symptom: hazy patches.
Cause: RH > 80%, surface close to the dew point.
Fix: ventilate/dehumidify → locally repair the faulty film + re-prime.

  • Weak adhesion
Symptom: comes up in a 24-hour tape test.
Cause: dust/oil, high pH or CM%.
    Fix: degreasing/sanding → re-measure → re-prime.

  • Moving on too early
    Symptom: aggregate sinking, inhomogeneous curing.
Cause: the primer hadn't dried yet.
Fix: sand back the faulty section → re-prime → wait it out.

9) 🧱 Surface-specific guide

  • Concrete / cement screed (CT): remove laitance, remove dust; CM ≤ 9%, pH ≤ 10. Roughen up smoothly troweled zones.

  • Calcium sulfate screed (CA / anhydrite): moisture-sensitive; CM% is critical, sanding off the surface "skin" is mandatory.

  • Ceramic/stone: degreasing, roughening up on glazed tile; deep-cleaning of grout lines.

  • Old resin coating: activate the surface by sanding, then vacuum; a test patch is recommended.

  • Wall/baseboard/stairs: first brush, then roller – the primer's texture holds the fresh material in place.

10) 🌧️❄️ Water permeability & outdoor frost resistance

Viranix stone carpet is water-permeable: water doesn't pool on the surface, but drains through quickly. So in winter, there's no continuous water film that would expand when it freezes. The key is the right slope, professional priming, and consistent topcoat maintenance. ✅

11) 📝 QA & documentation – checklists

Before installation

  • CM (≤ 9%) and pH (≤ 10) measured, recorded

  • T/RH/DP logged (T ≥ +5 °C, RH ≤ 80%, DP +3 °C)

  • Photo of the prepared substrate

After priming

  • Matte, sealed film – no glossy/pooled spots

  • Dry to the touch; leaves no mark on a glove

  • Corners/expansion joints/penetrations covered

  • 24-hour tape test – doesn't lift

  • Photo of the finished primer layer

Before moving on

  • If 24–48 h have passed: remove dust again

  • Check the weather/climate window

12) ❓ FAQ

Does it really need to be a thin layer? Yes. The primer is an adhesion bridge – applied thick, it dries slowly, stays sticky, and causes defects. On a highly absorbent substrate, two thin coats is the solution.
What's a realistic primer consumption? 0.10–0.30 kg/m² (typically 0.20–0.25 kg/m² on normal concrete). Plan for a +5–10% buffer.
When can I move on to the stone carpet/topcoat? Once the primer is matte and dry to the touch (usually 4–12 hours, depending on conditions).
Is it good for an uncovered terrace? Is it winter-proof? Yes. Water passes through the system instead of pooling; slope + professional priming = a winter-proof surface.

✅ Closing summary

  • Viranix primer comes pre-mixed – it just needs to be applied properly.

  • No quality without measurement (CM, pH, T, RH, dew point).

  • Always a thin, sealed film – if the substrate is absorbent: two thin coats, not one thick one.

  • QA discipline = an attractive, durable, premium result for 10–20 years. ✨
